Foundational learning

In 2021, the Government of India launched a foundational literacy and numeracy initiative under National Initiative for Proficiency in Reading with Understanding and Numeracy (NIPUN Bharat) to ensure that every child attains foundational learning. Under NIPUN Bharat, each state is directed to ensure foundational learning for grades 1 to 3 by the year 2026.
We launched a Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) intervention in 2022 to improve the basic literacy and numeracy of children in our areas of operation. We identified several gaps in teaching material, knowledge, pedagogy, and human resources in consultation with government teachers of grades 1 to 5. Educated volunteers from the local community were recruited and trained and are aiding the government teachers in implementing the foundational learning content through innovative pedagogies. We also provided teaching learning material to government schools.

Coverage

The FLN intervention runs in government schools in grades 1 to 3 in 19 blocks of Odisha and grades 1 to 5 in all 18 blocks of West Singhbhum district, Jharkhand.
Currently, FLN is running in 4,595 government schools with the help of 3,929 volunteers.

Crowdfunding Campaign

To raise resources for FLN, a crowdfunding campaign has been launched.
